A—NY was asked to improve access to the monument commemorating the Abbey of St Helier at Elizabeth Castle, introducing new handrails and lighting within one of Jersey's most sensitive historic settings.
The design uses a pair of simple bronze handrails, one to each side of the steps, with concealed fixings and footings to keep the intervention as light as possible. Bronze was chosen for its durability in the exposed marine environment and to sit comfortably alongside the castle's existing material palette and recently installed lighting.
Low-level lighting was also introduced to improve visibility around the steps after dark. The result is a small, carefully judged intervention that improves access and safety without competing with the monument or the wider castle.
